To get the cheapest insurance rates online, you need to compare prices from as many companies as possible.  In the old days, this may have been difficult.  You would need to call or go visit each insurance agent in your city or town to get a quote.  It could literally take a week to figure out what agency offered the lowest rates.

The internet has now made it possible to compare insurance prices online in a matter of minutes.  The average person can save $100′s per year by shopping for insurance online.  When you find a quote your happy with, you should sign up for that insurance provider right away, because the rates could change quickly, and you may end up having to pay more in the near future.

Besides comparing prices to find the cheapest insurance rates, you should also understand how insurance companies calculate rates.  Each insurance provider has different formulas for determining the amount of your premiums.  Some things that insurers may use to figure the amount you’ll pay for insurance include your history of claims, the location where you live, and possible your credit history.

Auto insurance companies started to use personal credit scores over the last few years because they found a direct correlation between a persons credit score and the likelihood of a claim being filed.   It may not be fair that even if you have a perfect driving record, and have never filed a claim, your insurance rates may go up because your credit score went down.  Insurance companies are in the business to make money, so any way they can find to raise rates, they will take advantage of it.

Another factor that will determine how much you have to pay for insurance is the amount of the deductible.  The deductible is the amount you will need to pay before your insurance company begins to make payments.  The higher the amount of deductible, the lower your premiums will be.  Conversely, if you select a lower deductible your rates will be higher.  This is true with any type of insurance in which there is a deductible.

Different types of insurance will have different factors that affect the amount you pay.  In the future we will discuss how to save money on each different type of insurance.  For now just know that to find the cheapest insurance rates online, you will need to compare prices from several different companies.
